Ohio Nursing Home Ranked Among Worst Nationwide

A Cincinnati-area nursing home has been placed on a federal “Special Focus Facility” list, ranking it among the worst facilities in the country due to a history of serious quality issues.

East Galbraith Health Care Center in Deer Park, Ohio, owned by Provider Services Holdings Co. of Cleveland, was rated much below average in health inspections and staff in The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Service (CMS) report. East Galbraith also scored below average on a 2011 resident satisfaction survey conducted by the Ohio Department of Aging.

The three most recent inspections by state officials in 2012 revealed 12 deficiencies at the facility – twice the state average – including a failure to report to police that a female resident with dementia was being sexually abused by a male resident with dementia, a female resident with incontinence having her clothes changed by male workers against her wishes, and at least one patient not given the proper dosage of medication prescribed for depression.

The facility must make improvements if it does not want to face fines or be terminated from participation in Medicare and Medicaid. About 50% of the nursing homes in the SFF program significantly improve their quality of care within 24-30 months after being listed, while about 16% tend to be terminated from Medicare and Medicaid, according to CMS.
