Pedestrian accidents continued an alarming tend in 2022

A disturbing traffic trend has continued to rise in Ohio and throughout the United States. Statistics show that pedestrian accidents continued to grow in the first half of 2022, following a 40-year high in pedestrian deaths in 2021.

Historical statistics make the trend even more disturbing

The analysis from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) called the Spotlight on Highway Safety report offers the first look at motor vehicle accidents in 2022, finding an alarming trend dating from 2019. Pedestrian accidents had surged 19% when statistics from the first half of 2019 were compared with the first half of 2022.

Motorists now kill an average of 19 pedestrians per day. 2022 national statistics show that there were 1.04 pedestrian deaths per 100,000 people. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that 31,785 people died in crashes in the first nine months of 2022, representing a marginal decrease.

Why are pedestrian deaths increasing? GHSA has recommended following the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Roadway Safety Strategy (NRSS), an approach that addresses safety in users, vehicles, speeds, roads and post-crash care to protect people on foot along with those in vehicles.

Pedestrians have little protection against motor vehicles

Pedestrians often end up with severe personal injuries when hit by cars, motorcycles and trucks because they are no match for vehicles that weigh thousands of pounds. These accidents frequently result in traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) or extensive spinal cord injuries, broken bones, internal injuries, etc.

If you or a family member have sustained injuries as a pedestrian in a motor vehicle accident due to the negligence of a driver, you have the right to file an injury lawsuit seeking compensation. You can use the money from a successful claim for medical and living expenses.
